Vaginismus – when the vaginal muscles can no longer be controlled
Vaginismus – also called vaginal spasm – can make it significantly more difficult for women to enjoy their sex life and can affect self-confidence and thus quality of life. Therapy with Botox injections at Praxis Jadore can often prevent vaginal spasms by relaxing the vaginal muscles.
A sudden onset of vaginal spasm can cause strong insecurity in affected women, which can develop into a fear of a renewed, uncontrollable vaginismus. This can create a vicious circle that promotes even stronger tension, making the pain worse and causing sexual activity with a partner to be associated with feelings of fear.
As a result, women suffering from vaginismus may withdraw from social life, avoid relationships and thus experience a psychologically burdensome restriction of their everyday life and personality.
Vaginismus can have various causes: in addition to traumatic experiences, various stress factors can be responsible, usually associated with the problem of being able to fully relax; acquired phobias can also trigger a vaginal spasm. As a result, the tension of the pelvic floor muscles may no longer be voluntarily controlled, which can cause insecurity in the affected women.
Treatment of vaginismus with Botox by Dr. Christoph Jethon at Praxis Jadore can be an immediately effective solution for treating vaginal spasm. Botox therapy can break the body's previously fixed reaction pattern by relaxing the vaginal muscle itself, which can reduce the fear of cramping as a consequence.
How does Botox work in vaginismus therapy?
Botox injections are normally known for relaxing the facial muscles responsible for wrinkle formation, because the active ingredient inhibits nerve transmission to the muscle and thus reduces its activity. Targeted injections with Botox can therefore significantly relax individual muscles. This effect can also occur in the vaginal area; the activity of the circular muscle there may be temporarily dampened, but not completely blocked. As a muscle relaxant, Botox can relieve the cramped vaginal muscles and thereby interrupt the chain of negative thoughts and the body's physical reaction to them.
What is the course of Botox therapy for vaginismus at Praxis Jadore?
The injection of Botox to relieve vaginismus can also be carried out in consultation with your gynecologist or general practitioner, who will examine you beforehand. Afterwards, Dr. Christoph Jethon will discuss the procedure of this treatment with you during a preceding detailed consultation; he has many years of experience in treating vaginal spasm with Botox injections, informs you about possible risks and explains what results you can expect.
The treatment of vaginismus at Praxis Jadore is performed on an outpatient basis and takes about 30 minutes. Dr. Christoph Jethon injects the Botox into several sites of the circular muscle in a dosage tailored to you. If necessary, you may receive a local anesthetic beforehand. After the anesthesia wears off you can immediately go home or return to work.
No special convalescence or follow-up care is necessary. You should only refrain from sports or strenuous activities for the following two days. The full effect of the Botox injections does not appear immediately but only after about one week. For this reason you should ideally abstain from sex during this time.
How long does the effect of a Botox treatment last?
The effect of the Botox injection usually lasts for about 6 months. If signs of a recurrence of the vaginal spasm appear afterward, the Botox treatment at Praxis Jadore can be repeated.
What risks and side effects does Botox therapy have?
The injection of Botox can, when using very fine cannulas and the very gentle technique of Dr. Christoph Jethon, be perceived only as a slight pressure. Dr. Jethon places these specifically at several points of the circular muscle at the vaginal entrance to achieve maximum effect. The full muscle-relaxing effect of Botox may take about a week to occur. With expert application, no major after-effects or side effects are expected; temporarily, however, the vaginal area may feel a bit dry or swollen.
